
Miners Defeat Wild Things

Washington, PA - The Southern Illinois Miners had a complete night at CONSOL Energy Park as they defeated the Washington Wild Things 7-1. Dave Harden pitched seven solid innings to earn his third win of the 2012 season.
The Miners got the offense rolling early with a sacrifice fly early by Chad Maddox in the top of the first off Wild Things starter Gary Lee to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Miners came right back in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Darian Sandford to take the lead 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning with the Miners leading 2-0, DH Jason Ganek hit a two run homerun off Wild Things starter Gary Lee to give the Miners a 4-0 lead.
Miners starter Dave Harden did not allow an extra base hit until the bottom of the sixth inning by Wild Things third baseman Doug Thennis which set up a sacrifice fly to give the Wild Things their only run of the night.
The Miners added another run in the top of the eighth inning with a single by Darian Sandford to give the Miners a 5-1 lead. Second baseman Will Block hit a two run home run in the top of the ninth to give the Miners a 7-1 lead. Ben Shivers made his 2012 debut and pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to give the Miners a 7-1 victory.
The Miners (11-5) will send Darrin Tew (0-0) to the mound tomorrow in his first regular season start in game two of the three game series vs. Washington (6-9). He'll be opposed by RHP Justin Smith. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show will begin at 5:45 with Mike Ventola on the Miners Radio Network. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
