Grizzlies Fall to Schaumburg in Road Trip Opener

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers scored five runs in the first three innings and held on for a 5-4 victory Tuesday night against the Gateway Grizzlies at Boomers Stadium. The loss brought Gateway's losing streak to three games.

Schaumburg (9-7) scored three times in the second on two hits and two Gateway errors before scoring two more in the third on three hits.

Gateway (7-9) scored their first run of the game on a Jonathan Johnson RBI single in the third inning.

The Grizzlies got two more in the sixth to draw within two runs. Jerod Yakubik picked up a sacrifice fly while Johnson Shelby ripped an RBI single.

The score stayed 5-3 until the ninth inning when Gateway rallied. Chris McClendon was hit by a pitch on his right foot and had to leave the game with an injury. Richie Jimenez Jr. pinch ran and advanced to second on a Schaumburg passed ball. With two outs, Antone DeJesus kept the game alive on an RBI single that scored Jimenez. Rookie Casey Allison, who was playing his first professional game, struck out with DeJesus on first base to end the game.

Johnson, Shelby and Justin Dunning all had two hits for Gateway. Dunning was also playing in his first professional game.

Cale Johnson (0-2) took the loss for the Grizzlies. He surrendered five runs, three earned, in five and a third innings. He walked six batters and had no strikeouts.

The Grizzlies and Boomers play game two of the series on Wednesday evening at Boomers Stadium. St. Louis native Tim Brown (1-1) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:30 CT.
