Rockford RiverHawks News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Walks proved costly to Rockford pitching on Tuesday as the RiverHawks fell, 6-4, to the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park.
Rockford pitchers combined on a four-hitter, but also combined for 14 walks, two hit batsmen and a wild pitch. Rockford starter Kasey Kiker walked nine, including two batters who scored on Sean Gusrang's two-out, go-ahead home run in the third inning. Kiker (0-1) allowed just two hits, but balked in the tying run in the second inning and did not get past the fourth inning.
Traverse City starter Brooks Belter (2-0) gave up three runs on seven hits, but struck out seven and walked three over seven innings to get the win. Scott Mueller pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save.
Rockford designated hitter Devin Shepherd was 2-for-3 and helped give Rockford a first-inning lead with a two-out bloop single.
Javier Herrera was 0-for-3 and his 10-game hitting streak ended.
The RiverHawks and Bums play again at 6:05 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
