Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums got a homer as well as a career-high four RBI from Sean Gusrang as the Beach Bums took the first game of a six-game homestand by a 6-4 count over the Rockford RiverHawks.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, the Beach Bums put two on with two out as Gusrang stepped in and proceeded to deposit a hanging curveball from Rockford starter Kasey Kiker over the rightfield fence for a 4-1 TC lead.
Traverse City would expand the lead in the fifth as with Ryan Still on second and Chase Burch on first, both reaching on walks, Jeff Flagg greeted reliever Drew Rucinski with a single to right, scoring Still to push the advantage to four. The base knock gave Flagg a 10-game hitting streak, the longest for the Beach Bums this season.
The RiverHawks would not go quietly as Rockford scored a pair of runs to chase TC starter Brooks Belter in the sixth and close the gap to 5-3. Traverse City would get one of the runs back an inning later as Flagg led off with a double. A groundout moved him up to third where he stood when Gusrang hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Flagg for a 6-3 edge. The RiverHawks scored a run in the top of the eighth to close the scoring.
The two squads traded runs in the first two innings as Rockford got a first inning run on a Devin Shepherd RBI single while the Beach Bums countered in the bottom of the second as Kiker allowed a walk to Gusrang, a single by Marcus Nidiffer and hit Kyle Eveland to load the bases before balking in a run.
Belter (2-0) pitched 5.1 effective innings for the win, allowing three runs while striking out seven. Scott Mueller tossed a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the year. Kiker allowed five runs in 3.2 innings, walking nine batters in the process.
Traverse City will send Bennett Whitmore (0-1, 3.45) to the mound on Wednesday against Ziggie VanderWall (1-0, 4.50) for the RiverHawks. It is a Weenie Wednesday with one dollar of hot dogs, brats and Hawg Dogs at the ballpark. For tickets or information, call 943-0100 or visit www.tcbeachbums.com.
