Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers announced today that forward Jason Dawe has agreed to terms for the 2004-05 season. The announcement was made by Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson.

Originally selected in the second round, 35th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Dawe brings the experience of 366 NHL games to this relatively young Checkers team. The signing of the 5'10", 189-pound lefty fills the final veteran spot on the roster.

"He's got tons of experience, and he'll be a role model for all of our players, both on the ice and in the locker room," said Wilkinson. "Plus, he can contribute a lot of offense."

And contribute he has. Over the course of his NHL career, Dawe, a native of North York, Ontario, has racked up 176 points, scoring 86 goals and 90 assists. The journeyman has played for the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens. Most recently, Dawe saw action with the Checkers-affiliated New York Rangers during the 1999-00 and 2001-02 seasons.

Last season, Dawe spent time with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and Karpat of the Finnish National League. During his 41 games with the Americans, he totaled 29 points, 20 of them coming off assists.

The Checkers hope to have the 31-year-old Dawe in the lineup for tomorrow's game against the Greenville Grrrowl.

Other transactions: The Checkers announced today that they have released defenseman Brett Peterson. The team has also announced that goalie Mike Ayers has been traded to the ECHL's Dayton Bombers for cash considerations.
