Christie also announced that second-year defenseman Bryce Charpentier was claimed off waivers on October 20.
Sanford â a 5-foot-8, 180-pound native of Alma, New Brunswick â was signed to a two-way (AHL/ECHL) contract by Montreal on October 8. The 20-year-old was invited to Montreal's Annual Rookie Camp & Tournament, where he finished with two assists in three games, before his reassignment to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League (AHL). He spent the majority of his four-year Major Junior "A" career with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), collecting 181 points (55g, 126a) and 456 penalty minutes (PIM) in 231 career games.
Last season, Sanford ranked first among team defensemen in points (53) and sixth overall with Moncton. In 2002-2003, his third Major Junior "A" season, he ranked third with Moncton in assists (45) and points (61), while registering single-season Major Junior "A" career bests in those respective categories. The 25-year-old, who represented Johnstown in the 2004 Par-A-Dice ECHL All-Star Game, ranked 11th among ECHL rookies in points during 2003-2004. He also enjoyed a one-game call-up to the AHL with the Binghamton Senators.
Charpentier â a 6-foot-5, 220-pound native of Temecula, Calif. â amassed 270 total penalty minutes (PIM) as rookie in 2003-2004, splitting the year between the Long Beach Ice Dogs (29gp=120 PIM) and Toledo (26gp=150 PIM). In 2002-2003 (his last of three Tier II Junior "A" seasons), the 22-year-old also collected 270 PIM over 44 games (6.12 PIM per game average) between the Canmore Eagles of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCHL).
