Whitecaps Take Game One from the Chiefs

July 1, 2021 - Midwest League (MWL)
Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, Ill. - West Michigan used a big first inning and a five-run outburst in the ninth to knock off the Chiefs 9-4 on Wednesday.

West Michigan sent all nine men to the plate in the first inning and scored four times against Peoria starter Connor Lunn.

Lunn settled in, however, and made it through four innings and did not allow another run.

The Peoria offense got things going in the bottom of the fourth. After Pedro Pages walked, Brady Whalen doubled to put runners at second and third. Then, Leandro Cedeno delivered a single to left field that scored the pair. Later in the inning, Zade Richardson drove in his 15th run of the season and cut the deficit to 4-3.

It was the closest the Chiefs got, however. West Michigan scored five more runs in the ninth inning to pull away. Francisco Hernandez added a 459-foot blast in Peoria's half of the frame but the home team came up short.

The Chiefs will host West Michigan in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 5:05. Michael YaSenka will start game one, while Mac Lardner makes his first start since May in game two. The weekly Thirsty Thursday promotion will be honored through both games and a ticket gets you into both contests tomorrow.
