Captains Sweep Cubs in Return to Action

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (27-23) swatted three home runs across both games of a doubleheader sweep against the South Bend Cubs (20-29) on Thursday at Classic Park. The Captains took game one ,5-4, clinging to the lead late. In game two, the Captains came from behind in the sixth inning to top the Cubs, 3-2.

Game One

José Tena got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning. Leading off the frame, Tena unleashed on a solo home run to right field to put the Captains on top, 1-0.

South Bend evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Edmond Americaan walked against Captains starter Xzavion Curry to begin the inning. Americaan stole second base with one out. Grayson Byrd drove home Americaan with a soft line drive that squeaked beyond George Valera in right field for an RBI double.

Lake County took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Naranjo walked to set the table. Victor Nova came up next and belted a two-run home run to put the Captains up 3-1. Will Brennan singled with one out, and with two outs Bryan Lavastida added a single, then Valera walked to load the bases. The Cubs went to the bullpen with the bases juiced and two outs for Tena. On the first pitch from reliever Bryan King, Tena delivered a two-run single that scored Brennan and Lavastida to stretch the Captains' lead to 5-1.

The Cubs hit back-to-back homers to begin the fifth and pull the Cubs within two. Bradlee Beesley started the fifth with a high fly ball to right field that snuck over the wall for a solo HR. Jake Washer then hit a line drive that cleared the ball in right field to cut the Lake County lead to 5-3.

Another solo home run brought the Cubs within one run of the Captains in the top of the sixth. Grayson Byrd connected on a deep home run to right field to lead off the inning and make the score 5-4.

Kevin Kelly (5) tossed the final 1.2 innings to earn the save for the Captains. He allowed one hit.

Curry (1-0) worked 5.1 on the mound to earn his first win as a Captain. He struck out 6 with one walk, surrendering four runs on five hits.

Max Bain (2-3) tossed 3.2 innings allowing five runs to take the loss. He allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out four.

Game Two

There was no score through the first four innings of game two with Matteo Bocchi dealing for the Cubs and Logan Allen cruising for Lake County.

The Cubs got to Allen for two unearned runs in the top of the fifth. After Jake Slaughter led off the inning with a single, an error at third base from Victor Nova allowed Matt Warkentin to reach base. With two outs Allen walked Delvin Zinn to load the bases. Bradlee Beesley was up next and delivered a two-run single to put the Cubs ahead 2-0.

The Captains roared back in the sixth to take the lead against the Cubs' bullpen. Austen Wade walked on a 11 pitch at-bat. Clark Scolamiero came to the plate next and swatted a two-run home run for his first hit of the season to even the score, 2-2.

Later in the sixth, the Captains took the lead. Brennan and Valera both walked, then a single up the middle by Joe Naranjo loaded the bases with one out. The Cubs then called on right-hander Tanner Jesson-Dalton to relieve lefty Burl Carraway. Raynel Delgado hit a high bouncing ball up the middle, but the Cubs could not turn the double play. Brennan scored on the fielder's choice to put the Captains in front, 3-2.

Tim Herrin (2) entered in the seventh to close the game and earn the save for the Captains.

Allen (5-0) allowed two unearned runs while matching a career best nine strikeouts to earn the win.

Carraway (2-1) allowed all three Captains runs in 0.1 innings to take the loss. He walked three and allowed one hit.

The Captains play game three of the six-game set against the Cubs on Friday with Tanner Burns on the mound. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Classic Park.
