Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Two-out magic Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park led the Quad Cities River Bandits to a 12-3 victory against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The River Bandits (33-16) recorded multi-run outbursts in the second, third, seventh, and eighth innings, and every run was a two-out tally.

Quad Cities claimed a 5-0 lead after early rallies. Jimmy Govern's three-run home run in the second inning put the River Bandits on the scoreboard. During the third, Michael Massey notched a sacrifice fly before Jake Means added an RBI triple.

The Kernels (27-24) inched within 5-2 after scoring in the fourth and seventh innings. Michael Helman hit a fourth-inning double that plated Seth Gray. Gabriel Maciel came home during a double play within the top of the seventh.

A pair of runs during the bottom of the seventh pushed the margin to 7-2 Quad Cities. Logan Porter capped a streak of four consecutive two-out baserunners with a two-run single.

Helman's RBI double in the eighth brought the difference to 7-3 before the River Bandits exploded for five runs against position player pitchers Daniel Ozoria and Yeltsin Encarnacion. Eric Cole's RBI single opened the latest two-out rally. Two runs apiece came on a Means double and a Govern single to give Quad Cities the 12-3 advantage.

Yohanse Morel (3-1) was charged with just one run in two-plus innings and received credit for the win. Will Klein allowed an inherited runner to score along with a run of his own in the final three frames within his first professional save. Starting pitcher Anthony Veneziano worked during the first four innings and had a personal-high-tying eight strikeouts.

Cody Laweryson (0-1) surrendered a career-high five runs in three frames in a losing decision. He also led all Kernels pitchers with five strikeouts.
