COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Jared Reaves grounded an 0-2 pitch up the middle to snap a 1-all tie in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night, securing a 2-1 victory for the West Michigan Whitecaps over the Great Lakes Loons. The game was played before a packed crowd of 7,530 on Dime Dog night.

In the top of the second, the Loons loaded the bases against starter Jake Thompson on two hit batsmen and a walk, but did not score. But in the third, Leo Rodriguez notched a bunt single for the Loons' first hit of the game. Corey Seager followed with a double to left-center to drive in the game's first run. After an Aaron Miller single, Tyler Ogle grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Whitecaps responded with a run in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded hit batsman of Connor Harrell, a run that was unearned following an error by Seager.

With the score still tied 1-1, the Whitecaps threatened against reliever Jonathan Martinez. With runners at first and third, Owen Jones entered the game and induced consecutive pop ups to short by Jason King and Dean Green.

But in the ninth against Jones, David Gonzalez hit a ground ball down the third base line. Brandon Dixon attempted to make a back-handed play but the ball went past him and was scored a double. Raph Rhymes was intentionally walked. Then pinch hitter Lance Durham grounded to second, but with a full count the runners were in motion, preventing a double play. Jones worked ahead 0-2 to the next batter Reaves, before his ground ball up the middle secured the win.

Both teams received solid pitching performances. Miguel Sulbaran started for the Loons and did not allow an earned run over three innings, surrendering one hit and striking out three. Martinez followed with 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Jones (2-2) escaped an eighth inning jam but allowed the winning run to take the loss.

Thompson was charged with one run over five innings. Josh Turley and Guido Knudson threw two scoreless innings each. Knudson (1-1) captured the win.

Great Lakes (23-15 second half, 50-58 overall) and Whitecaps (19-17, 52-54) continue their series Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Fifth Third Ballpark. Right-handed pitcher Brandon Martinez (1-1, 4.65) is scheduled to start for the Loons against righty Endrys Briceno (6-6, 4.15). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM. That game is followed by two games between the teams at Dow Diamond Thursday and Friday. Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL.

NOTE: Prior to the game, right-handed pitcher Arismendy Ozoria was promoted to Rancho Cucamonga. Right-handed pitcher Thomas Taylor was added to the roster from Ogden.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
