Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings continue to struggle to piece together winning streaks in 2013. On Wednesday, Clinton followed up a victory in the series opener with a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers.
Clinton scored first, but the early lead did not last. D.J. Peterson smashed a hanging breaking ball from Dakota Bacus for an RBI double to give the LumberKings a 1-0 lead.
Bacus, a native of nearby Moline, Illinois, settled down after the first. The Beloit starter kept Clinton in check long enough for the Snappers to turn around the game with five unanswered runs.
Beloit scored twice in the fourth, with a single from Dayton Alexander bringing home Nick Rickles to give the Snappers a 2-1 lead. Renato Nunez ran Tyler Pike from the game in the fifth with an RBI double to make it 3-1.
Later in the fifth, Rickles broke open the game with a two-run triple into the left-center gap. Beloit led 5-1 at that point and cruised to the victory.
The LumberKings did not get the usual dominant performance from ace Tyler Pike. The left-hander battled through 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks.
Clinton scored in the sixth on an RBI single from Martin Peguero, but the two-out rally stopped short of erasing the deficit. The LumberKings managed just one baserunner in the final three innings off the Beloit bullpen.
Bacus took home the win, improving to 9-4 on the season. Tyler Pike settled for his fourth loss of the year, his first defeat since May 8th. Austin House earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth inning.
The LumberKings and Snappers continue their four-game series on Thursday night. Clinton turns to right-hander Charles Kaalekahi (4-3, 3.95) in game three, while Beloit counters with right-hander Andres Avila (4-1, 3.38). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CT at Ashford University Field.
