Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels dropped their second-straight game at Community Field as they fell to the Burlington Bees 3-1 on Wednesday night. The Kernels were held to four hits, and they committed four errors on the evening. The team has combined for nine hits in the first two games of the series.
Former Kernels left-hander Ryan Crowley was excellent for the Bees in the win. He went a career-high eight innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out eight and walked none. Crowley made 13 starts for the Kernels in 2012.
Crowley (9-5) had only allowed two hits - both doubles - through eight scoreless innings when he entered the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead. Joel Licon led off the ninth inning with a double, and Crowley exited. The Bees then used three more pitchers to secure the win, each retiring one Kernels batter. Joseph Krehbiel relieved Crowley and immediately walked Jeremias Pineda. After a strikeout, Jorge Polanco singled to load the bases. Christopher O'Grady came on to face Mike Gonzales, who brought Licon home with a RBI sacrifice fly. This made the score 3-1, and Burlington went back to the bullpen to bring on Austin Adams. He retired Adam Brett Walker on a grounder to first base with runners on the corners to end the ballgame, picking up his first save.
Josue Montanez (4-4) suffered the tough loss as all three runs he allowed were unearned. He pitched five innings and allowed four hits while striking out four and walking three.
Errors directly led to all three runs for the Bees. In the second inning Zach Wright doubled and then scored when left-fielder Max Kepler dropped a line drive off the bat of Chevy Clarke, putting Burlington up 1-0. The Bees extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Sherman Johnson stole third base and came home on a throwing error by catcher Jairo Rodriguez. In the fifth inning Niko Goodrum had a grounder go between his legs at second base, which allowed Angel Rosa to reach third base. Rosa scored when Pedro Toribio bounced into a fielder's choice, extending the Bees lead to 3-0.
Tim Shibuya was solid in relief for the Kernels as he pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking none.
