Great Lakes Loons News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the second straight night, the West Michigan Whitecaps held the Great Lakes Loons' offense to just one run, winning Wednesday night 3-1.
The Whitecaps scored two runs in the first inning, proving to be enough for a victory. They tallied an insurance score in the eighth.
Brandon Martinez (1-2) surrendered the two first inning runs to the Whitecaps, but settled down, following the first inning up with five scoreless. He walked four and scattered four hits over six innings to take the loss. The Whitecaps scored in the first on an RBI ground out by Jason King and a run-scoring single by Lance Durham.
Luis Meza and Crayton Bare shared the scoreless seventh inning. Loons closer Craig Stem entered in the eighth in a non-save situation and surrendered a run on a sac fly by Jake Stewart.
The Loons' lone run came in the fifth on an infield single by Webster Rivas scoring James Baldwin. The run was set up by Baldwin's double and a sac bunt by Jeremy Rathjen.
Endrys Briceno (7-6) claimed the win for the Whitecaps, throwing five innings and allowing one run on just 51 pitches. Chad Smith, Calvin Drummond and Corey Knebel combined for four shutout relief innings. Knebel worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save.
The Loons stranded eight runners on base in the game - including two each in the sixth and seventh innings against Smith and Drummond.
The four-game home-and-home series continues Thursday at Dow Diamond between Great Lakes (23-16 second half, 50-59 overall) and the Whitecaps (20-17, 53-54). Game time Thursday is 7:05 pm. Youthful left-handed pitcher Julio Urias (2-0, 2.97) is scheduled to start for the Loons against righty Jeff Thompson (1-0, 2.70). Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL. It's a Chemical Bank Dollar Family Feast Night.
The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
