Burlington Bees News Release

Ryan Crowley twirled eight-plus innings of one-run ball, and the Bees took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Cedar Rapids Kernels to finish July with a 3-1 win.

Crowley (9-4) continued to thrive for the Bees (42-61, 16-22), firing eight scoreless innings before allowing a leadoff double that came around to score in the ninth. He struck out seven batters and has now gone five or more innings in 17 of his last 18 starts. The only exception was the start prior to the all-star break.

The Kernels (65-41, 25-13) struggled defensively, committing four errors, which led to three unearned runs against Josue Montanez (4-4). Montanez tossed five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. The southpaw delivered five innings of one-hit ball in his last start versus the Bees.

Cedar Rapids made the game extremely interesting in the ninth. Joel Licon led off the frame with a double off Crowley, who was pulled in favor of Joey Krehbiel. Krehbiel walked Jeremias Pineda, but struck out Niko Goodrum for the first out. Jorge Polanco singled to load the bases, which promoted Chris O'Grady to come into the game. O'Grady got Mike Gonzales to knock a sacrifice fly to center, and was relieved by Austin Adams with two outs. Adams (1) was able to have Adam Brett Walker hit a ground ball to first that was stopped by Wade Hinkle on a diving stab. Hinkle flipped to Adams for the final out.

Burlington got the scoring started in the second. Zach Wright doubled off Montanez with one out and scored when Max Kepler dropped a line drive hit by Chevy Clarke with two outs in the inning.

One inning later, Sherman Johnson doubled with one away and stole third during Pedro Toribio's at-bat. The throw from Jairo Rodriguez went into left field, allowing Johnson to give Burlington a 2-0 lead.

The final run for the Bees came in the fifth thanks to another error by the Kernels. Angel Rosa led off the inning with a single and went all the way to third when Niko Goodrum allowed a certain double play ball to get under his legs. Rosa came home when Toribio grounded into a fielder's choice.

The Bees wrap up July with a 15-13 record, their first winning month of the year, and also guarantee at least a series split with the Kernels. The third game of the four-game series will be played on Thursday, as Brandon Love takes on David Hurlbut at 6:30 p.m at Community Field.
