COMSTOCK PARK, MI - A two-run triple by shortstop Gleyber Torres gave the South Bend Cubs all the offense they needed to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-0 Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

In what turned into a pitcher's duel; the game stayed scoreless until the eighth inning, when South Bend compiled a two-out rally as left fielder Charcer Burks singled to put runners at first and second with two outs. Torres then gave the Cubs the lead as his line drive to right field glanced off a diving glove of Ross Kivett to score the only runs in the contest.

James Farris (2-1) earned the victory after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Jordan Minch pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save. Whitecaps starter Jeff Thompson enjoyed his best start of the season, twirling six shutout innings and striking out five. Reliever Josh Heddinger (0-1) allowed Torres' triple in suffering his first loss of 2015.

ON THE DEFENSIVE

The Cubs made a spectacular defensive play to end the fifth inning. Centerfielder Derek Hill launched a ball into the right-field gap with the bases loaded, but it was caught with a backhanded sliding catch onto the warning track by South Bend outfielder Rashad Crawford. Earlier in the game, Crawford took a base hit away from Hill with a diving catch to end the third.
