Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Cleveland Indians first-rounder Justus Sheffield lived up to his billing, and the Lake County Captains (9-11) used back-to-back home runs to edge the Lansing Lugnuts (13-7), 2-1, on Wednesday night at Classic Park.
The outcome continued the clubs' close-knit season series; all five of the Lugnuts' and Captains' meetings have been decided two runs or less, with neither team scoring more than three runs in any of the games.
Sheffield (W, 2-1), the 2014 Gatorade National Player of the Year as the top high schooler in the country, struck out eight Lugnuts in five scoreless innings while allowing only two runners - a Rowdy Tellez second-inning double and a Justin Atkinson fifth-inning single.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dorssys Paulino and Francisco Mejia knocked consecutive home runs off Lugs reliever Andrew Case (L, 2-1) to supply the extent of the Captains' offense.
Lansing's only run came in the seventh off reliever Thomas Pannone, thanks to an Atkinson RBI single. With runners at second and third, Pannone coaxed a Michael De La Cruz groundout to first to end the threat.
Pannone quashed another Lugnuts opportunity in the eighth, striking out Tellez with two runners aboard.
Closer J.P. Feyereisen (Sv, 4) pitched a perfect ninth.
In defeat, starter Sean Reid-Foley pitched three scoreless innings, walking four and striking out three Caps. He was followed to the mound by Case for the fourth before Justin Shafer worked the final four frames without allowing a hit or a run.
The Captains' win sets up a rubber match in the three-game series, with Lansing right-hander Chase De Jong (1-1, 3.20) taking on Lake County right-hander Jordan Milbrath (0-2, 4.61).
The Lansing Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 1st, opening a six-game homestand with a Freebie Friday: Kids Eat Free, featuring Myron Noodleman and postgame LAFCU Fireworks. For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
