Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - The 25-inning scoreless streak came to an end in the 1st inning. But, it looked like the Great Lakes Loons were going to drop their fourth game in a row. However, Jimmy Allen and Faustino Oguisten provided the fireworks in the 8th inning as the Loons pulled out the 8-7 win against the Bowling Green Hot Rods Wednesday at Dow Diamond.

After Julian Leon and Jacob Scavuzzo singled, and Kelvin Ramos walked, Allen roped a tripled to deep left-center field clearing the bases to pull the Loons level at 7-7. Following a pitching change that saw Bowling Green replace Damion Carroll with Mike Franco, Faustino Oguisten singled to third base and beat out a throw from Grant Kay to score Allen and give the Loons the lead.

"We kept grinding at bats," said Loons manager Luis Matos. "Our pitchers have been the backbone of this team this year. They pitched well today. This is the first game we have scored like nine runs so it was good to come back like that."

Allen finished the game 3-for-4, including a double and triple, to go along with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Oguisten also went 3-for-4 in a winning effort for the Loons, tripling and driving in two runs of his own. Scavuzzo turned in a 3-for-3 night and scored a run.

Oguisten got the scoring started in the first when he was able to cross home plate on a throwing error by Hot Rods catcher Nick Ciuffo on a pickoff attempt at third base.

The next two innings saw Bowling Green hang five runs on the Loons. Casey Gillaspie tied proceedings 1-1 in the 2nd inning with a home run to right field, his third of the season. Cristian Toribio added another solo home run the following inning to make it 2-1. An infield single from Justin Williams plated Thomas Milone, Riley Unroe scored on a sacrifice fly from Ciuffo and Coty Blanchard singled to bring in Gillaspie, extending the Hot Rods' lead to 5-1.

Great Lakes starter Grant Holmes (0-1) was done for the night after 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits. He walked four and struck out six.

The Loons added two runs in the 3rd inning to cut the Bowling Green lead to 5-3. But, the Hot Rods added a single run in the 4th and 5th innings to make it 7-3.

It was Allen again as he led off the 7th inning and kick started the offense when he doubled to left center field. Johan Mieses then brought him in with a sacrifice fly to give Great Lakes momentum heading into their eventual game-winning 8th inning.

Carroll (0-1) was saddled with a blown save and the loss for Bowling Green, giving up five runs on five hits in the 8th inning.

Yeuri Gonzalez (1-1) picked up the win as he pitched three shutout innings in relief. Bubby Rossman walked two batters and gave up a hit to load the bases in the top of the 9th inning, but the right-hander worked out of the jam to pick up his second save of the season.

"I knew I had to go after that last batter, down 2-0," Rossman said. "It's fun to have that pressure on me. It was really exciting watching the comeback from the bullpen. We've been struggling at bat and it's great to put up eight runs like that."

Trevor Oaks will get the start for the Loons Thursday. The right-hander from Riverside, Calif., has allowed just one run in 17 innings of work with Great Lakes and holds the third lowest ERA in the Midwest League (0.53). Opponents are batting just .130 against Oaks this season, whose WHIP stands at 0.71. Hyrum Formo takes the hill for Bowling Green.

It will be a Chemical Bank $1 Family Feast Night on Thursday at Dow Diamond. Hot dogs, chips, ice cream sandwiches and 16oz. Pepsi products will be available at Great Lakes Grill locations on the concourse, all for $1.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information, call 989-837-BALL or visit loons.com.
