River Bandits Even Series with 4-0 Win

DAVENPORT, IOWA - Quad Cities evened the series on Wednesday night with a 4-0 shutout win over Cedar Rapids. The Kernels grounded into three double plays on the night. The teams meet again on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in the rubber game of the series.

Mat Batts (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year for Cedar Rapids. The southpaw yielded four runs (three earned) in 6 1/3 innings on seven hits and one walk while striking out six. Austin Chrismon (2-1) earned the win with four shutout innings of relief. The right-hander allowed four hits and struck out a pair in his fourth appearance.

Quad Cities (14-6) got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting the River Bandits in front, 2-0. Kristian Trompiz led off the inning with a double to right field. Bobby Boyd then laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached second on a throwing error by Batts, scoring Trompiz. Alfredo Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving Boyd to third. Mott Hyde extended the River Bandits lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to center, bringing in Boyd.

The River Bandits tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh, going in front, 4-0. Back-to-back singles by Jacob Nottingham and Bryan Muniz gave Quad Cities runners on the corners to start the inning. Jorge Martinez followed with an RBI groundout to second, bringing in Nottingham from third and advancing Muniz to second. Ryan Bottger then doubled down the left field line, scoring Muniz.

T.J. White led Cedar Rapids (12-8) with three hits while Zack Granite finished with a pair of hits, extending his team-best hitting streak to nine games. C.K. Irby threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Kernels. The 22-year-old struck out one and retired all five hitters he faced in his sixth appearance this season.

Daniel Mengden recorded a no decision in his third start of the year. The right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Kernels look to claim the series in Davenport on Thursday night. First pitch in the rubber match from Modern Woodmen Park is at 7:00 p.m. RHP John Curtiss (1-1, 4.63) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Brock Dykxhoorn (2-1, 2.51) pitches for Quad Cities in the series finale.

The Kernels return home on Friday vs. the Clinton LumberKings. Friday's game is set to begin at 6:35 p.m. and is a 98.1 KHAK Kernels Mug Club Night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free Kernels/Avengers T-Shirt as part of The Avengers Movie Theme Night.

The Kernels Ticket Office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The ticket office is closed on Sunday, but opens at 11 a.m. on Kernel Sunday Home games.
