LumberKings Earn Series Opening Win, Take Down Timber Rattlers 7-2

April 29, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (8-11) used three multi-run innings and a 10-strikeout performance by starter Pat Peterson (W, 3-1) in route to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (6-13).

Clinton came out with the win, though their first inning struggles continued, in particular at home. For the 13th time in 19 games overall, Clinton allowed its opponent to get on the board first. For the sixth time in seven home games, that meant that the opposing team plated at least one run before Clinton stepped up to the plate. Peterson allowed a leadoff double to Monte Harrison, who then scored on a throwing error by Clinton catcher Daniel Torres.

Though they trailed early, the LumberKings took control just an inning later, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Three hits, an error by Wisconsin third baseman Sthervin Matos, a bases loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly put Clinton ahead 3-1, enough offense to support Peterson and the Clinton bullpen.

Though three runs were enough to take down the Timber Rattlers, the LumberKings added on multiple runs on two other occasions. Arby Fields hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, and Estarlyn Morales drove in his team high 13th and 14th runs with a two-out single in the seventh.

Peterson's night came to an end after the fifth inning, one in which he struck out the side. The lefty matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.87, tied for fifth among qualified starters in the Midwest League. Troy Scott relieved Peterson to begin the sixth, and allowed an unearned run in his third appearance of the season, while Nick Kiel retired five of the six batters he faced to close out the game.
