West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - Ramon Garcia has pitched well against every Midwest League opponent he has faced - except the Dayton Dragons. Garcia, who allowed five runs in five innings against the Dragons on Memorial Day, gave up four runs (3 ER) in six innings in Dayton on Tuesday and took the loss in a 5-2 Whitecaps defeat.
In ten starts against other opponents, Garcia has not allowed more than two runs in a single game. He finished strong on Tuesday in Dayton by retiring the last 10 batters he faced.
B. J. Szymanski started the scoring for the Dragons with a solo home run to lead off the second inning. Later in the second Chris Denove went deep for the first time this year with a two-run shot to make the lead 3-0.
Gerardo Cabrera added a solo home run in the eighth off reliever Jake Baxter to cap the scoring for Dayton.
West Michigan scored their only two runs in the top of the third on an RBI walk to Mike Hernandez and an infield RBI single by Justin Justice, which cut the lead to 3-2.
Zach Ward improved to 5-0 for Dayton with six innings on the mound and just four hits allowed. Blake Hendley earned the save for the second game in a row and leads the Dragons with 13.
The Whitecaps had a pair of opportunities to score late in the game. Mike Hernandez led off the sixth with a double, but was doubled off at third trying to tag up on a fly ball to center by Justin Justice.
Thanks to an infield single, a stolen base and an error, Cameron Maybin was at third with no outs in the eighth, but did not score.
West Michigan lost the final two games in the series to earn a 2-2 split in the series at Dayton, but finish 5-3 on the road trip. However, Lansing defeated Wisconsin on Tuesday to take over first place in the Eastern Division by a half game. The Whitecaps' magic number to win the division in the first half remains at 7.
