Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 13, 2006) Kiel Thibault was 3-4 with a pair of two-out RBI and scored a run to lead the Burlington Bees (32-31) to a 5-4 win over the Kane County Cougars (39-26) at Community Field tonight. The Bees win this series 3-1 with all three victories coming by just one run. The Bees now lead the season series 4-3 and have won nine of twelve against the Cougars at home over the last two seasons.

The Cougars had a 3-0 lead early in this game against Bees starter Michael Penn. With two outs in the top of the second, Frank Martinez doubled to the wall in right and scored when Mario Lisson had a slow ground ball off the bat of Raul Padron go off of his glove into left field for an error. The Cougars added two more in the top of the fourth. With one out, Jeff Baisley reached on an infield single and Anthony Recker blasted a two-run homer to left for his first hit in 13 at-bats against the Bees this season. Those were the only runs allowed by Penn (5-2) who worked through seven and got the win. The Bees have won six of his last seven starts.

The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning against Cougars starter Trey Shields. With one out, Thibault and Jeff Howell reached on infield singles and JP Lowen hit a ball through Steve Kleen at first for an error that allowed Thibault to score and Howell to get to third. Chris McConnell followed with a single to left that drove in Howell and the Bees were within one. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lisson was on second with two outs and Thibault singled into centerfield to drive him in and even the score at three.

The Bees took the lead for the first time in the seventh. Ethien Santana led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Antonio Sabatini, and to third on a groundout. Lisson then ripped a 1-2 pitch for a double to left to put the Bees up 4-3 and Thibault followed it up with a single to right to add an important insurance run. Thibaults hit knocked Shields (6-6) out of the game. Joe Newby finished the final inning and a third. The loss ended a streak of four straight winning starts for Shields.

Eliezer Garcia worked a scoreless eighth and allowed a hit and Gilbert De La Vara took over for the ninth. Recker greeted De La Vara with his second long home run to left of the night and trimmed the Bees lead to 5-4. De La Vara then struck out pinch-hitter Jose Pineda and after a single by Martinez, fanned Padron and Wes Long to end the ballgame for his seventh save. The three-run deficit was the largest overcome by the Bees in a win this season.

The Bees are off tomorrow and start a four-game series at Clinton on Thursday to finish the first half. RH Carlos Rosa (5-3, 2.87) will start the first game of the set. The game will start at 7:00 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
