Rally falls just short as Kernels fall, 2-1
June 13, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels came within a few feet of repeating Monday's walk-off magic as they fell to the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 2,678 fans on a Z 102.9 Lunch at the Ballpark noon game. The loss drops the Kernels to 29-37; Fort Wayne improves to 30-33.
It was a pitcher's duel most of the game as Kernels' starter Andy Hill (1-3) scattered seven hits over seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. The only blemish: a sacrifice fly by Kyle Blanks and an RBI single by Santiago Guerrero. Robert Romero and Ryan Aldridge pitched two innings of no-hit relief for the Kernels.
Hill's counterpart, Wizards' starter Stevie Delabar (5-4) was even better, holding the Kernels to one hit over seven innings and striking out six.
The Kernels trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth as Anderson Rosario singled to lead off the inning. Brad Coon singled to center, which moved Rosario up to third. Dallas Morris lifted a fly ball to center field deep enough to score Rosario from third. Brad Coon stole second to put the tying run at second with one out. But Brett Martinez struck out and Flint Wipke hit a deep fly ball that center fielder Mike Sansoe hauled in just in front of the 407 foot marker - the deepest part of Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernels take a day off on Wednesday before wrapping up the first half of the 2006 MWL season as they host Beloit, June 15-18. Thursday will be 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday. Fans can get 12 oz draft beer or soda and slushies for $1 and bottled soda and water are $2 all game long.
Tickets are available by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560, or beat the lines at the box office by ordering your tickets on-line at www.kernels.com.
