Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed closer Brian Stitt on the Quad Cities disabled list, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced Monday. Stitt, a right-handed pitcher who was removed from Wednesday's game after taking a line drive off his left hand, will have his DL stint backdated to June 8.
Victor Moreno, a right-handed pitcher from Hato Mayor del Rey in the Dominican Republic, has been called up from extended spring training (State College) to replace Stitt on the active roster. Moreno spent his first two seasons in the Angels' organization, going 6-3 with a 1.83 ERA in the Dominican Summer League in 2003 before heading to the United States. Moreno posted an 0-2 record with a 4.71 in 14 appearances (one start) in the Arizona League in 2004 while striking out 23 in 28.2 innings, but did not pitch last season. The St. Louis Cardinals signed Moreno as a minor league free agent on October 14, 2005.
Stitt, 23, hits the DL after a solid start to his 2006 season, racking up six saves with a 3.29 ERA over 12 appearances since being called up from extended spring training (State College) on May 8. He has 12 strikeouts with two walks in 13.2 innings of work. Signed by the Cardinals during spring training, Stitt spent his first four professional seasons in the Mariners' organization and was a Midwest League All-Star with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 2004.
The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
