Wheeling Nailers News Release
Last week, the Wheeling Nailers ran into a minor bump in the road, as they dropped a pair of decisions to the Kalamazoo Wings and Norfolk Admirals, bringing their season record to .500 at 4-4-0. On Friday night, the Nailers scored their quickest goal of the campaign, as Adam Krause dented the twine just 93 seconds into the contest. Kalamazoo rallied to take a 2-1 lead, before Wheeling responded with a power play goal from Ty Loney and an even strength marker to grab a 3-2 advantage the other way. Unfortunately, the Wings had the final say, netting the last two goals for a 4-3 final score. The visitors were 2-for-5 on the power play. One night later, the Nailers allowed their fastest goal of 2015-16, as Norfolk scored 27 seconds after opening face-off. The first period was a wild one, which produced five goals. Despite tallies by Zack Torquato and Jarrett Burton, Wheeling found itself trailing, 3-2. That was as close as the Nailers could get, as the Admirals lit the lamp once in the second and twice in the third for the 6-2 win.
Friday was the only time in the first eight games of the season that both teams have not only held a lead in the same game, but also surrendered a lead, setting up a comeback win. Franky Palazzese picked up his second career assist on Friday, ensuring that at least one Wheeling goaltender will record at least one helper in 11 straight seasons. Prior to Saturday night, the last time the Nailers and their opponent combined to score five goals in a single period was January 17th of last season in a 7-2 Wheeling victory at Brampton. Zack Torquato made his season debut on Friday night, becoming the third player in team history to play in five different seasons. Stefan Brannare holds the record with six, while Torquato's five are tied with Arpad Mihaly for second most.

This week, the Wheeling Nailers will experience their busiest stretch in recent memory, as they will take the ice five times over a six-day period, with four of the contests taking place at WesBanco Arena. On Tuesday morning, the Nailers will look for their fifth straight win in a home Education Day Field Trip Game, when they play their lone home tilt of the season against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Cincinnati has the second best points percentage in the ECHL (.786), coming in with a 5-1-1 record, good for 11 points. After that, Wheeling will play a home-and-home series against the Reading Royals on Wednesday and Friday. The Nailers and Royals will see each other eleven times this year, after Wheeling won the season series in 2014-15 for the first time in eight years. Last weekend, Reading improved to 5-3-0 on the season, by sweeping a pair of games from the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, outscoring them by a combined total of 10-1. Finally, on Saturday and Sunday, the Nailers will play their only two games of the year against the Evansville IceMen. Evansville collected three of its 15 wins against Wheeling last season, and enters this week with a 2-5-0 mark through seven games. Former Nailer Daultan Leveille leads the IceMen with three goals and four points.
