Toledo Walleye News Release

Walleye Notes

Looking back at last week : Toledo and Cincinnati played a closely contested game with each team scoring once in regulation time and overtime. Both teams finished with 31 shots on goal through overtime with both Kyle Bonis and A.J. Jenks scoring in the shootout for a 2-1 win. Zach Nastasiuk scored on a penalty shot early in the third period Friday night to pull Toledo within a goal at Fort Wayne but the Komets pulled away late in a 4-1 loss. Toledo dominated much of the game Saturday night in the home opener out shooting Adirondack 31-16 but dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 to the Thunder.

A new Huntington Center record: Saturday night saw a new single-game attendance record for the Huntington Center. 8,317 fans cheered as the Walleye raised two banners (2014-15 North Division and Brabham Cup) to the ceiling. That broke the previous mark of 8,300 first set on January 24, 2015 vs. Allen. Toledo also had 8,300 in game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals on May 27, 2015.

Nastasiuk and Nedomlel to Grand Rapids: Sunday, forward Zach Nastasiuk was reassigned by the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL from Toledo to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. The 20-year-old appeared in five games for the Walleye with two points (1G, 1A). He picked up his first professional goal Friday night in Fort Wayne on a penalty shot. The Red Wings reassigned defenseman Richard Nedomlel today to the Griffins. The Prague native appeared in eight games for the Walleye accruing 14 penalty minutes and one assist.

Lerg razor sharp : Goaltender Jeff Lerg continues to have a stellar season for the Walleye allowing a total of two goals in two games this past week. This week's performance lowered his overall goals against average to 1.36, which is the third best in the ECHL.

Power Play due for a breakout : Toledo's power play has yet to really get on track this season and has gone 19 straight chances without a goal over a span of four games. The Walleye did have a five-game stretch last season in which the power play went goalless (0-14) but did finish with the league's best PP unit at 24.7%.

Road three in three ahead : Toledo heads back out on the road for a three-game weekend at Manchester, New Hampshire. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Walleye and the Monarchs. The two meet a total of five times this year with two coming later in the year in Toledo. Manchester is 3-4-0 to start the season.

Walleye Player of the Week:

Beau Schmitz (0 goals - 1 assist = 1 point)

Walleye Goaltender of the Week:
