Manchester Monarchs News Release

WEEKEND REVIEW

The Monarchs crossed the border for a three-game series with the Brampton Beast in Brampton, Ontario, Nov. 6-8, losing two of the three games against their conference foe.

Friday night, the Monarchs took a 2-1 lead into the second period, but couldn't close the deal, losing, 4-2. David Kolomatis scored his first goal of the season to get the Monarchs on the board, and Joe Diamond notched his second goal of the campaign, but it wasn't enough to seal the deal, as brothers, Luc and Jeremie Blain, tallied two of the Beast's four goals. Diamond's goal broke an 0-for-14 power play slump to begin the season.

Saturday's game saw the Monarchs score a season-high five goals in a 5-1 win. Matt White scored his first two goals of the year after scoring 28 goals with the Ontario Reign (ECHL) last season. Diamond scored for the second consecutive night and Matt Leitner recorded two assists, pushing both players to three-game scoring streaks. Gasper Kopitar added a goal, his first of the season, and Troy Power recorded his first professional goal on a short-handed, empty net tally at 13:17 of the third period. Michael Houser recorded the win for the Monarchs, pushing his record to 1-1-0-0 over the first two games of the weekend.

Sunday's game ended similarly to Friday's loss, with Brampton scoring a late empty-net goal to seal a 4-2 win. White stayed hot for the Monarchs, adding a goal and an assist, but the Monarchs couldn't overcome three consecutive goals by the Beast. David Kolomatis added the second tally for the Monarchs, but the comeback effort was unsuccessful. Colin Stevens got the start for the Monarchs and took the loss, pushing his record to 0-2-0-0 on the season.

WHAT'S NEW IN KALAMAZOO?

The quick stop in Kalamazoo, Mich., marks the first of two games the Monarchs will play against the Wings this year. Manchester will venture out to Kalamazoo again Saturday, Dec. 19, for a 7:15 p.m. start. Kalamazoo will not make a trip to the Queen City during the regular season. The Wings currently sit tied for first place in the Eastern Conference's North Division with the Toledo Walleye (9 pts), and hold a 2-3-1-0 record at home.

SQUISH THE FISH

The weekend three-game series with Toledo begins the first of five times the teams will face-off this season, and will give the only glimpse of the Walleye at the Verizon Wireless Arena for Monarchs fans. Toledo is tied with the Kalamazoo Wings for first place in the North Division, and have amassed a 4-3-0-1 record away from the Huntington Center, where they have played only one game this season so far. Toledo comes to town losers of their last two games.

LEADING THE WAY

Joe Diamond (3g, 4a) and Matt Leitner (2g, 5a) continue to lead the Monarchs in scoring with seven points each, with Matt White (3g, 3a) close behind after his huge weekend, sitting at six points. Leitner is tied for 6th in the ECHL in rookie scoring, despite playing in the fewest amount of games by any of the leaders, and goalie Michael Houser ranks 17th in the ECHL with a 2.22 GAA.

GETTING THE CALL

The Monarchs have been picked over early into the season, with five of their training camp forwards called up to the AHL. Eric Neilson was loaned to the St. John's IceCaps, Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Derek Arnold recalled by the Ontario Reign and the Portland Pirates received Zac Larazza and Darik Angeli on loan.

HOME COOKING

After the game in Kalamazoo, the Monarchs will return to the Verizon Wireless Arena after a five-game road trip, for a season-long, seven-game home stand, beginning Friday night. The last time the Monarchs skated on home ice was Oct. 25, when they played the Adirondack Thunder. The Monarchs are currently 1-1-0-0 at home.
