The Week That Was ---November 26th-BRAMPTON BEAST 4, RAPID CITY RUSH 3 (RC: Schultz-2 G; BRM: Fawcett-GWG w/1:32 left in 3rd
Brampton started off the scoring in the game just 6:20 in, as Jason Dale sent a rolling puck past Marcoux to give the Beast an early 1-0 lead. With 19.4 seconds left in the frame, Chad Painchaud sent a cross-ice one-timer in on the final Beast power play of the game to extend the Beast advantage to 2-0 heading into the second. Rush captain Jesse Schultz scored twice in the second period, with Anthony Maione adding another in between to maintain a 3-2 Beast advantage. For the first time this season, the Rush came back to tie the game at 3-3 thanks to Robin Soudek, but unfortunately for the Rush, with 1:32 left in the game, Brayden Rose floated a shot from the point, that achieved the same result as the Rush's game-tying goal: off of the body of Tyson Fawcett and in, ultimately leading to a 4-3 Rush defeat.
---November 28th-BRAMPTON BEAST 2, RAPID CITY RUSH 0 (RC-1st shutout loss of season)
It took 47:44 seconds of hockey, but after a stalwart offensive effort that saw the Rush outshoot the Beast 21-5 in the second period, the Beast would eventually change the scoreless scoreboard. Josh McQuade rifled a shot past Danny Battochio's net, and took an active bounce off of the kickplate of the back wall behind the goal. Waiting for the resulting rebound was Jason Pitton, scoring his fifth of the season to give the Beast a 1-0 lead with just 12:16 left in regulation. Less than four minutes later, the Beast would extend the advantage, with Stephon Thorne scoring his second off of a rebound from an Anton Corbin shot to give the Beast a 2-0 lead. The Rush would struggle to find offense, and despite a late power play and extra-attacker, would fall to the Beast 2-0, the first time the Rush have been shutout all season long.
---November 29th-BRAMPTON BEAST 2, RAPID CITY RUSH 1 (RC: Schultz-G; BRM: MacIsaac, Dale-G each)
Back-to-back nights, the Rush and Beast saw a scoreless first period, but for the first time in 80:22 of playing time, the Rush would ignite the goal lamp and the home crowd. On a give-and-go with Sean Erickson, playing forward for the second consecutive night, Jesse Schultz buried the puck for his sixth of the season 22 seconds into the middle frame, giving the Rush their first lead of the series at 1-0. Just over five minutes later though, lightning would strike twice for the vistors. Taking a bounce off of the kickplate similar to Jason Pitton's goal last night, Mike MacIsaac sent a rebound past a sprawling Danny Battochio to tie the game at 1-1. Exactly 17 seconds later, Jason Dale sent a loose puck past Battochio to give the Beast a 2-1 advantage at the end of 40 minutes of play. The Rush threw everything they had at the net, but Rollheiser stood tall and gave the Beast their third consecutive win over the Rush, 2-1, extending the Rush losing streak to eight games.
Notes and Numbers
Let The Record Show...- The Rush's losing streak remains a franchise-record skid, and is now at eight games. This is the second consecutive year in which the Rush have set a franchise-record losing streak, with the Rush dropping six straight from 2/7-2/15.
Fearless Leader - In a time where the Rush are desperate for offense, Rush captain Jesse Schultz notched his first multi-goal game of the season Wednesday night, and has scored three times in the last three games. He is now tied for the team lead in goal-scoring with second year pro and linemate, Kyle Stroh.
Kill Switch - The Rush penalty kill continues to add to its early banner season. Despite the losing streak, the Rush PK unit has killed 23 of the last 27 power plays they've faced (85.1%). Additionally, the Rush are within the top 10 in all penalty-killing categories, placing 5th-best at home (90%), tied three ways for 8th-best on the road (85.7%), and are now the best unit in the entire ECHL (87.7%). This success comes just a season after the Rush set a franchise low for penalty-killing in a season, only able to stave away 74.6% of the power plays they faced. For the record, the record for highest penalty-killing percentage in a season is 86.1%, set back in the 2011/12 season.
CRUNCHING NUMBERS - Last Week vs the Beast
- 26 - the number of consecutive power plays in which the Rush have failed to score. After starting off on fire, the Rush power play has slowed down as of late, with this consecutive streak of fruitless power plays coming over the span of their last five games, dating back to Allen on 11/16
- 25 - the number of shots in the second period of Saturday night's game. This is a new franchise record, surpassing the old one of 24 set nearly three years ago. The Rush tied a season-high for shots in a period in the first period with 21, then set the new mark in the next 20 minutes of play.
- 132 - the number of total shots on net recorded by the Rush in the three-game set. The total of 56 alone from the final matchup of the series was 5 away from tying the franchise record for most shots in a game at 61, dating back to a TRIPLE-OVERTIME playoff game against the Colorado Eagles in the 2011 Ray Miron President's Cup Norther Conference Finals. Additionally, the Rush only managed to score 4 goals on this shot total, which is barely a 3% scoring percentage.
