Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves snapped their 12-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Trenton Thunder on Monday night at Arm & Hammer Park.
Erie struck first in the top of the first inning against Trenton starter Caleb Smith. Wynton Bernard led off with game with a single and moved to second on a Josh Prince knock. The single for Bernard extended his hitting streak to 12-straight games. After a double play, Bernard was at third and scored on an error on a ground ball off the bat of Dean Green for a 1-0 lead.
Trenton responded in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Derek Hankins. Aaron Judge singled with one out and scored on a two-out Eric Jaigelo double, tying the game.
The SeaWolves regained the lead in the second. Brendan Harris, James Robbins and Connor Harrell all walked loading the bases. Miguel Gonzalez hit into a fielder's choice, plating Harris making it 2-1. Erie would not trail the remainder of the game.
In the last of the second, Trenton loaded the bases on Hankins on a Mason Williams single and back-to-back walks from Taylor Dugas and Dan Fiorito. Hankins induced a 1-2-3 double play and fly out to center, getting out of the jam with no damage.
In the third, Jeff McVaney walked, Green singled and with one out, Harris walked loading the bases for Robbins. Robbins slapped an opposite-field single, scoring McVaney for a 3-1 lead. Harrell followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Green making it 4-1 Erie.
The 'Wolves added another run in the fourth when McVaney blasted a solo home run, his first, off of reliever Johnny Barbato making it 5-1. It was the first home run hit by a SeaWolves batter since April 19 at Bowie (Bernard).
Erie added one more run in the eighth. Harrell doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Bernard walked putting runners on the corners. With Prince hitting, Bernard stole second and on an errant throw, Harrell scored making it 6-1.
Two Erie relievers, Joe Mantiply and Edgar De La Rosa, combined to shut out the Thunder for the final four innings of the game. Mantiply walked one and gave up one hit while De La Rosa went two perfect frames.
Hankins (2-3) earned the win allowing a run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
