New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
READING, PA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats were beaten by a big inning, falling 5-1 to the Reading Fightin' Phils at First Energy Stadium Monday night.
An early run didn't hold up for the Fisher Cats (13-12), who didn't get a single hit after the fourth inning. They took an early lead against the Fightin' Phils (14-9), but gave up five runs in a disastrous fifth inning punctuated by the second grand slam in two days against New Hampshire pitching.
New Hampshire began the scoring in the top of the first inning against Reading righty Aaron Nola (W, 3-2). With one out and a full count, Dwight Smith, Jr., rocketed a Nola fastball over the fence in center field for a solo homer, making it 1-0 in favor of New Hampshire.
The hosts roared into the lead in a big fifth inning. Fisher Cats starter John Anderson (L, 1-2) walked KC Serna with two runners already on to load the bases for Aaron Altherr. The Reading right fielder crushed a 3-1 pitch to left for a grand slam, making it 4-1in favor of the Fightin' Phils. Tony Thomas added an RBI double for Reading to make it 5-1.
Anderson took the loss, with five runs allowed on ten hits and two walks in five innings; he fanned two. Scott Barnes threw two innings of scoreless relief, surrendering three hits and notching two strikeouts. Tiago Da Silva tossed a perfect frame of relief, outdoing a poor outing the day before against the Binghamton Mets.
The second game of the series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, with RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-0, 0.00) getting the ball for New Hampshire against Reading southpaw Jesse Biddle (3-0, 3.38). Coverage with Ben Gellman begins at 6:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and online at www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Friday, May 8 to play Trenton. An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the 6:35 p.m. contest. Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com., stopping by the Fisher Cats ticket office, or by calling (603) 641-2005.
