Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced for April 27-May 3

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 27th through May 3rd:

Altoona Curve first baseman Josh Bell has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 27th-May 3rd. The 22-year old hit .615 (16-for-26) with three triples, one home run, 11 RBIs, five runs scored, three walks, one stolen base and a .962 slugging percentage in six games for the Curve last week. Bell, who is a native of Irving, Texas, had at least one hit in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in five of those games, including going 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and two RBI in Altoona's 7-4 win over Erie on Sunday. The 6'2", 235 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.615), hits (16), total bases (25), triples (3) and OPS (1.574) last week and tied for the lead in RBIs (11). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in on-base percentage (.613-2nd), slugging percentage (.962-2nd), extra-base this (4-tied 7th), runs scored (5-tied 8th) and home runs (1-tied 8th). With his performance last week Bell raised his batting average to .395 on the season, which ties him for the league lead. Josh, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the third best prospect in the Pittsburgh organization, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the 2011 draft out of Jesuit College Preparatory School in Dallas, Texas.

Ben Lively, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Fightin Phils, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 27th-May 3rd. The 6'4", 190 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Fightin Phils last week and had a record of 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA. Lively, who is a native of Pensacola, Florida, made his first start of the week last Monday night at Richmond and threw seven shutout innings in Reading's 5-0 victory. He scattered six hits while recording seven strikeouts and one walk. Ben also got the win in his second start of the week, a Reading 6-5 win over the visiting Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon. He gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six innings of work. The 23-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (16) and innings pitched (13.0) last week and also tied for the league lead in wins (2). Ben, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the seventh best prospect in the Philadelphia organization, was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds for Marlon Byrd this past offseason. Lively was originally selected by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2013 draft after going 7-5 with a 2.04 ERA as a junior at the University of Central Florida.
