Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - A night after scoring 11 runs, the Binghamton Mets were only able to cross home once against the Portland Sea Dogs in the 4-1 loss Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton went 1-for-10 when batting with men in scoring position, leaving 10 on base in their second straight loss. Defensively, Binghamton committed a season-high three errors.
The B-Mets were held to nine hits, with three coming from Brandon Nimmo and two chipped in by TJ Rivera in his third game back from the disabled list.
Portland struck first, getting on the board in the first inning. Oscar Tejeda attempted to steal second base before the pitch, when an errant John Gant throw to second sailed into the outfield and allowed Jantzen Witty to trot home from third. Gant then stranded the bases loaded, keeping the deficit at one.
Binghamton's lone scoring attack came in the third inning when Nimmo notched his first hit of the night, a one out double to left field. Rivera then singled to put men on the corners with one out for Jayce Boyd. In his first game back, after missing five with a back injury, Boyd was able to beat out the double play ground ball and allow Rivera to come in through the back door, knotting the game at one. For Boyd it was RBI number 12 in his 19th game of the season.
Portland would take the lead right back in the fourth, starting the frame with a Reed Gragnani single to center, followed by Luis Martinez's first home of the year, a liner over the left field wall. Martinez has seven RBI, five coming in his last four games. It was just Portland's eighth home run of the year, and second away from home.
The Sea Dogs would add on later in the inning. Gant issued a walk and a single after the home run, and the two runners were moved into scoring position on Mike Miller's first sacrifice bunt of the season. One batter later, Carlos Asuaje singled to left to drive in Portland's fourth run of the game.
Gant (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs in five innings pitched. Mike Augliera (1-4) notched his first win of the year, holding Binghamton to one run and six hits over five frames.
The B-Mets (14-9) continue their series with the Portland Sea Dogs Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium, with a 6:35 PM first pitch. Binghamton RHP Seth Lugo (1-0, 1.38) gets the ball against RHP Mike McCarthy (2-2, 6.63). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
