Altherr slams Fightins to victory

Aaron Altherr helped power the Fightin Phils (14-9) to victory on Monday night as they defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (13-12) 5-1. His grand-slam in the fifth inning was enough for a Fightin Phils win.

Dwight Smith gave the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as he hit a solo home run off Fightin Phils starter Aaron Nola (3-2). Jon Berti led off the inning with a single but was picked off at first-base by Nola.

Reading exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning off Fisher Cats starter John Anderson (1-2) as they took a 5-1 lead. Gustavo Pierre and Roman Quinn led off with singles then advanced a base on a walk by KC Serna. Altherr then hit a grand-slam to give the Fightin Phils a 4-1 lead. Cam Perkins doubled after Brock Stassi flew out to right-field. Gabriel Lino lined out to third base then Harold Martinez hit a single with two outs. Tony Thomas added another run as he hit a RBI double off Anderson to score Perkins and give the Fightin Phils a 5-1 lead.

Aaron Nola allowed just run in seven innings to earn his third win on the season. He walked two batters and issued three strikeouts with five hits given up. He has issued just four walks on the entire season. Ethan Stewart pitched two shutout innings in relief just issuing one walk.

The Fightin Phils will play on Tuesday evening beginning at 6:35 pm against the Fisher Cats. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:05 pm. Fans can also watch the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 6:35 pm.
