Home runs by Jarek Cunningham and Aaron Baker helped West Virginia build an early four-run lead, and the Power took the opener of a four-game series with the Lexington Legends 7-3 Tuesday night at Applebee's Park.

The Power scored twice in the first inning. With one out, Cunningham tripled and scored on a base hit by David Rubenstein. After Baker walked, Rubenstein stole third. Baker was caught off first by Legends starter David Duncan, and was tagged out at second after first baseman Kody Hinze threw to shortstop Jiovanni Mier. Cunningham then broke for home and was safe when Mier's throw was wide of the plate for an error.

The Legends got a run back in the bottom of the second when J.D. Martinez tripled and scored on an infield hit by Andy Simunic.

The Power scored three more in the third inning. Elevys Gonzalez led off with a single, and Cunningham followed with his fourth home run of the season to give West Virginia a 4-1 lead. After Rubenstein fouled out, Baker homered to make the score 5-1. The Power added another run in the seventh on a walk to Hernandez, an errant pickoff attempt by Lexington reliever Luis Cruz, a sacrifice bunt by Bengie Gonzalez and a sacrifice fly by Elevys Gonzalez.

Lexington rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Brian Kemp walked. Jose Altuve singled, moving Kemp to third. Altuve stole second, and Kemp came home when catcher Ramon Cabrera's throw went into center field for an error. With two outs, Jake Goebbert doubled to score Altuve. After Mark Baca relieved Maurice Bankston for West Virginia, Martinez walked, but Hinze's line drive to left field was caught by Rogelio Noris for the final out.

West Virginia got its final run in the eighth on an infield hit by Rubenstein, a stolen base and a single by Cabrera.

Bankston (3-2), who relieved starter Phillip Irwin in the fourth inning, got the win. Duncan (3-1) took his first loss of the season.

Mier, the Legends' shortstop, left the game in the bottom of the first inning due to back spasms, but was doing well after the game.

The Legends and Power will play game two of the four-game series Wednesday morning at 10:05 at Applebee's Park.
