Hagerstown Suns News Release

It was a long evening at Municipal Stadium as the Hagerstown Suns (28-25) lost two games to the Lakewood BlueClaws (30-23) on Tuesday.

The first game was the conclusion of a game suspended on May 27th at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. The play resumed in the bottom of the 5th inning, with two outs and the Suns leading 5-3.

Lakewood came out strong right off the start of the first game with two runs on three hits against Suns reliever Glenn Gibson in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gibson ended up pitching two and two thirds innings, and allowed just two runs on three hits.

Hagerstown responded with two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 lead. JP Ramirez put the Suns in front with his fourth home run of the series, a solo shot to right field. Two batters later, JR Higley doubled the lead with a solo home run to right-center field, seemingly putting the Suns on track to the win with a 7-5 lead.

However, the BlueClaws responded in the bottom of the ninth. Two runs on four hits against reliever Rob Wort evened the score at 7-7 and send the game into extra innings.

The score remained tied through the 13th inning, but in the bottom of the 14th left fielder Leandro Castro homered on the first pitch of the inning from Patrick Arnold (1-2), giving the BlueClaws the 8-7 victory..

BlueClaws reliever Ebelin Lugo got the win by pitching the final three innings without allowing a run. Lugo had three stikeouts and gave up just one walk and no hits.

For the second game, Lakewood started swinging right off the bat with three runs in the top of the first inning. Jonathan Villar , Adam Buschini, and Leandro Castro scored on Jonathan Singleton's double to center field. Those three runs would hold up, as Lakewood went on to win 3-0 in seven innings.

The Suns could not get anything going offensively against Lakewood's staring pitcher Jared Cosart (6-1). The right-hander pitched a complete game shutout, and allowed just three baserunners in the game.

After the first inning, Dan Rosenbaum (1-2) was Cosart's equal, though the lefty was tagged with the loss. Rosenbaum allowed just the three first-inning runs and struck out four BlueClaws in five innings of work.

Paul Applebee pitched the final two innings for Hagerstown without surrendering a run.

The Suns are back in action tomorrow night against the BlueClaws at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
