Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - After allowing a leadoff single, LHP Robbie Ross retired 23-straight to lead the Hickory Crawdads to an 8-0 win over the Charleston RiverDogs, before 2,314 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday night. It was the second shutout win for the 'Dads in their last four games and sixth overall. Four of the six have been hurled by Ross, with two of those four thrown at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The Crawdads (33-20) got things started in the top of the first with a leadoff walk by SS Leury Garcia against LHP Josh Romanski (0-1, 18.00 ERA), making his pro debut as the starter for Charleston. RF Jared Prince followed by reaching on a fielding error by SS Jimmy Paredes, to put runners at first and second. After both Garcia and Prince advanced on a double steal, a passed ball by C JR Murphy allowed Garcia to score from third with Prince moving to third. DH Miguel Velazquez then drew a walk before C Zach Zaneski doubled to left, driving in both Prince and Velazquez, to put the 'Dads up, 3-0.
Paredes led off the first inning with a single against Ross (7-4, 1.96 ERA). However, Ross would then shut down the bats of Charleston (22-30), not allowing another hit in eight innings on the mound. He picked up four strikeouts along the way and his seventh win, tied for the league lead with the Rome Braves starter RHP Arodys Vizcaino.
Hickory added four more runs in the third. Velazquez led the inning off with a solo shot to left for his team-leading ninth homer of the season. Zaneski then doubled to right-center and was brought in on a second-straight double from LF Cristian Santana. 3B Matt West kept the momentum going with a two-run home run to left to increase the 'Dads lead to 7-0.
The Crawdads tacked on a final run in the ninth against reliever RHP Dickson Marquez. Prince led the inning off with an infield single hit off the body of Marquez. Velazquez was then plunked by Marquez before Zaneski grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, putting Prince at third with two outs. Santana kept the inning alive by smacking a single up the middle to plate Prince and cap the scoring at 8-0.
RHP Hector Nelo was called upon in the bottom of the ninth for Hickory, throwing a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
