Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Robbie Ross allowed just one hit in 8.0 scoreless innings of work to lead the Hickory Crawdads over the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-0, in front 2,314 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Tuesday night.
With the victory Hickory improves to 33-20, while Charleston drops their third contest in their last four, falling to 22-30.
Ross (7-4), a 2nd round pick, gave up a leadoff single to Jimmy Paredes in the first, but did not allow another baserunner. The Kentucky native retired 23 straight batters and faced the minimum through 8.0 innings, which was aided by J.R. Murphy's groundball double play after the Paredes single. Ross walked none, fanned four and is now tied for the league lead in victories and has tossed 14 consecutive shutout innings against the RiverDogs this season.
Hector Nelo got the first two batters of the ninth before allowing an infield single to Ray Kruml to break a skein of 25 straight batter set down. Paredes followed with a groundout to end the game.
Hickory got out to a 3-0 lead in the first against Charleston's Josh Romanski, who was making his professional pitching debut. Leury Garcia singled, moved to second on an error, took third on a double steal with Jared Prince and then scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Zach Zaneski's two-run double upped the margin, but Romanski struck out the next three batters to finish the inning.
The Crawdads began the fourth with four straight extra-base hits against Romanski, including a leadoff home run by Miguel Velazquez, a Zaneski double, a Cristian Santana RBI double and a monstrous two-run home run from Matt West making the lead 7-0.
Santana concluded the 8-0 affair with a ninth-inning RBI single against Dickson Marquez.
Romanski (0-1) surrendered seven runs on nine hits in just 3,0 innings of work, but Charleston's bullpen gave up only one run on three hits over the last 5.0 innings. Ronny Marte and Gabriel Tatis combined to retire 13 straight Crawdads between the fourth and eighth innings.
Leury Garcia and Zaneski had three hits each, while West and Velazquez belted home runs for Hickory, which was won eight straight games at Riley Park dating back to July 2009.
Game two of this series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday night. Charleston sends right-hander Sean Black (4-3, 4.84 ERA) to the mound, while Hickory counters with left-hander Robbie Erlin (1-1, 0.52 ERA).
