(CHARLESTON, W. Va.) West Virginia starter Robby Rowland turned in six strong innings, and the Power went on to a 5-2 win over the Lexington Legends Friday night.
The Power took the lead with two runs in the second inning. Dan Gamache singled, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Eric Avila. Avila moved to third on a single by Elias Diaz and scored on a wild pitch by Lexington starter Luis Ordosgoitti.
The Legends got one run back in the top of the fourth when Delino DeShields Jr. walked, stole second and scored on a single by Jay Austin. DeShields leads the South Atlantic League with 47 stolen bases and is one short of the Legends single-season record set by Josh Anderson in 2004.
West Virginia answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Gamache's grounder to first got past Zach Johnson for an error, and Gamache reached third base when the ball went down the right field line. Gamache scored on a single by Jose Osuna.
The Power added two more in the fifth inning. Diaz led off with a single and moved to second on Alen Hanson's sacrifice bunt. Taylor Lewis reached first on an error by shortstop Chan Jong Moon as Diaz advanced to third. Greg Polanco's double to center field scored both runners, giving West Virginia a 5-1 lead.
Mike Kvasnicka's solo homer in the top of the seventh inning closed out the scoring.
Rowland (3-1) allowed two hits and one run in six innings to get his third win. Nathan Kilcrease earned his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Ordosgoitti (1-2) worked the first six inning for the Legends and took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, and 10 hits.
West Virginia has won the first two games of the series, which continues Saturday. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
