Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh, thumping the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 11-4, before of 2,165 at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday evening.
The Grasshoppers (0-2, 46-26) jumped out to an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning. 2B Austin Barnes shot a one out double into the right-center field gap and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Barnes then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from 3B Josh Adams to put Greensboro up, 1-0.
The 'Hoppers collected a single run in both the second and third innings as well to boost their early lead. SS Terrence Dayleg led off the second by drawing a walk and quickly scored on an RBI double by DH Rand Smith. In the third inning, Adams drew a walk with one out and moved to third after back-to-back walks by 1B Ryan Rieger and RF Ryan McIntyre loaded the bases. Adams scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dayleg that opened the Greensboro lead to 3-0.
Hickory (2-0, 38-33) got on the board with their first run in the bottom of the third inning. 1B Jhonny Gomez led off the inning with a walk to reach first base. A passed ball followed by a bunt single from SS Luis Sardinas moved Gomez to third base. With runners at the corners, Sardinas took off from first base on a stolen base attempt that distracted the Grasshoppers while Gomez darted home from third, slicing the 'Dads deficit to 3-1.
With Hickory RHP Nick McBride (W, 3-1) keeping the Grasshoppers in check with scoreless relief, the Crawdads tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, CF Chris Grayson roped a low line drive over the right-field fence for a solo home run, shrinking the 'Hoppers advantage to one run. C Jorge Alfaro followed with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, DH Trever Adams doubled in Alfaro to tie the game, 3-3.
The 'Dads moved ahead by three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against RHP Chris Shafer (L, 0-1). Three consecutive singles with one out from Sardinas, 3B Drew Robinson and LF Jeremy Williams, who drove in Sardinas, scored the frame's first run and lifted Hickory into the lead. Robinson and Williams then came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Alfaro, putting Hickory ahead, 6-3.
After the Grasshoppers picked up a fourth run in the top of the seventh inning, the Crawdads responded in emphatic fashion with a five-run bottom of the frame. With two outs, Williams extended the inning and the 'Dads lead with a solo home run to right-center field. After Grayson and Alfaro reached base with a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, they each moved up ninety feet on a wild pitch. Grayson then raced home on an RBI infield single from RF Jordan Akins, which led to a throwing error that allowed Alfaro to score on the play as well. Adams put the final stamp on the onslaught with a two-run home run rocketed over the left-field wall, increasing the Crawdads advantage to 11-4.
