Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets hit into three double plays - including one that ended Friday night's game - in their first loss of the second half. Despite falling 5-1 to the Savannah Sand Gnats, the GreenJackets have still won 11 of their last 16 games and remain one of the league's hottest teams over the last two and a half weeks.
Trailing 5-0 in the seventh inning, the GreenJackets had their best chance to get into the game with three consecutive singles to lead off the inning against tiring Sand Gnats starter Jacob DeGrom. After the Sand Gnats made a pitching change, Jesus Galindo beat out a double play ball that brought home Augusta's only run to make it a 5-1 game. With runners at the corners, Kelby Tomlinson grounded into a double play on the first pitch he saw to end the inning and Augusta's best threat along with it.
The Sand Gnats built their lead by sending eight hitters to the plate and scoring three times in the first inning. After Gilbert Gomez led off with a double, Brandon Brown reached on a throwing error while trying to bunt Brown to third that ended up scoring Brown with the game's first run. After Augusta starter Chris Marlowe loaded the bases with a walk and a single, back-to-back bases-loaded, two-out walks brought in a pair of runs to give the Sand Gnats a 3-0 lead before Savannah hit into a double play to end the inning.
In the second inning, Savannah got another run on Cam Maron's RBI single and the Gnats would get another off the Augusta bullpen in the sixth on Brown's run-scoring double. Marlowe (1-4) was chased after three innings - his shortest start of the year. The Augusta righty allowed four runs - three earned - on five hits and a season-high five walks while striking out three.
DeGrom (3-1) scattered eight hits and a walk in six innings, but limited the GreenJackets to just one run while striking out five.
With the series even at a game apiece, the GreenJackets send Kyle Crick (2-4, 3.12) to the mound in search of their second win of the second half. He'll face Savannah righty Michael Fulmer (4-3, 3.35). First pitch from Savannah comes at 6:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Monday June 25th to open their longest homestand of the year with the first of a four-game series against the Asheville Tourists. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
