Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - After a wild game Thursday, the Gnats won a much more orderly contest over the Augusta GreenJackets 5-1 Friday night behind a strong performance from starter Jacob deGrom. The Gnats (1-1/42-27) picked up their first win of the second half.
The Gnats did not waste any time taking the lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning against GreenJackets' starter Chris Marlowe. Savannah drew two bases loaded walks in the inning to force in runs, one by 1B Brian Harrison, and one by DH Charley Thurber.
The three runs was plenty of support for deGrom and two relievers Friday. Degrom took a shutout into the sixth inning, when two pop-fly singles, and a soft line drive into left, chased him from the game. Reliever Chasen Bradford entered with the bases loaded and induced a pair of groundballs, the second of which the Gnats used to turn two to end the frame with just one run home. deGrom struck out five and walked just one batter while improving to 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 46.2 innings. TJ Chism worked around an error to handle the ninth inning. Eight of the nine GreenJackets' (1-1/33-38) hits were singles.
Savannah added a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from C Cam Maron. The hit extended Maron's hitting streak, the longest by a Gnat in 2012, to 15 games. He is tied for the third-longest hitting streak in the South Atlantic League this year.
