Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Lexington Legends 5-2 Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Robby Rowland pitched six innings for the Power and held the Legends bats in check while garnering five runs of support.
West Virginia took a 2-0 lead off Lexington starter Luis Ordosgoitti in the second inning. Dan Gamache led off with a single and scored two outs later on a double by Eric Avila for a 1-0 advantage. Elias Diaz singled and moved Avila to third. Diaz attempted to steal second while Alen Hanson was batting, and Legends catcher Roberto Pena threw the ball to second base, which allowed Avila to score for a two-run edge.
Each team scored a run in the fourth inning and the Power added a pair in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Jose Osuna singled in Gamache in the fourth. In the sixth, Gregory Polanco's tenth double of the season brought home Diaz and Taylor Lewis.
Mike Kvasnicka hit a solo home run off Power reliever Rinku Singh in the eighth to end the scoring. In the ninth, the Legends got two runners on base before Nathan Kilcrease struck out Brandon Meredith to end the game and secure at least a series split for the Power.
Rowland (3-1) picked up the win with his third quality start this season and avenged a May 23 loss at the hands of the Legends. Ordosgoitti (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing all five runs, three earned, over six innings of work. Kilcrease garnered his third save in as many chances to help with Power win their fourth straight game dating back to June 16.
West Virginia managed double-digit hits for the second game in a row. Eight of the nine Power batters had at least one hit, keyed by two hit nights from Avila and Diaz. Willy Garcia was 0-3 Friday, but did walk in the eighth to extendhis current on-base streak to 16 games.
West Virginia and Lexington continue this series Saturday at 7:05 pm. Ryan Hafner and Jonas Dufek will start for the Power and Legends, respectively, on Military Appreciation Night at Appalachian Power Park.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 2-0
OVERALL RECORD: 25-47
