Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Andrew Werner needed just 92 pitches-64 of which were strikes-to toss his first complete game of the season, but the River Cats lost to the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs by a score of 2-0 at Raley Field on Wednesday afternoon.
New Orleans broke a scoreless tie in the third thanks to Gorkys Hernandez, who reached on a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a single, then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Gil Velazquez. The Zephyrs' scored their second and final run in the fifth when shortstop Ed Lucas brought Hernandez home with a single to shallow left field.
The River Cats had few chances to score, putting only seven men on base on the afternoon. They made things interesting for the Raley Field faithful in the bottom of the ninth with runners on the corners and two outs, but designated hitter Stephen Vogt flew out to center field to end the threat and the game, giving Sacramento the 2-0 loss.
Hiro Nakajima collected two of the team's six hits, finishing 2-for-4, and now has a hit in three-straight games and seven of his last eight. Taylor also finished 2-for-4, while Vogt went 1-for-3 with a walk, collecting the team's only extra-base hit with his seventh-inning, ground-rule double to right field.
Werner (4-6) suffered the loss despite going the distance. The complete game was the second of the season for the River Cats, as right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray accomplished the feat in Fresno on May 1. The win was awarded to A.J. Battisto (1-0), who shut out the River Cats in five innings with two hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Chris Hatcher collected his second save in as many nights, giving him 13 on the year.
The 2-0 loss is the first shutout suffered by the River Cats this season. They were 2-0 in shutouts entering Wednesday's game.
The eighth and final game of the homestand is set for Miller Lite Thirsty Thursday at 7:05 p.m. when River Cats righty Bruce Billings (4-2, 4.97 ERA) takes on Zephyrs lefty Brian Flynn (1-4, 3.99 ERA).
