Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (23-22) defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (25-18) 7-3 in game two of their four-game set. Right-handed pitcher Blake Johnson tossed six scoreless innings of five-hit ball, walking one and fanning four to earn the win.
The Isotopes middle infielders Alfredo Amezaga (3-for-4, R, 3 RBI) and Elian Herrera drove in four of the club's seven runs. Herrera went 4-for-5 (2B, R, RBI), marking his third straight and team-leading fifteenth multi-hit game of the season and extending his hitting streak to four games.
The Isotopes scored first, plating two runs in the third. Brian Barden (3-for-4, R) and Amezaga led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Tony Gwynn and Herrera followed with an RBI groundout and an RBI single, respectively, to give Albuquerque a 2-0 advantage.
Right fielder Alex Castellanos tossed out his fifth base runner of the season from the outfield in the third inning. Chili Buss then took over duties in right field in the sixth inning after Castellanos was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
The Topes tacked on two more in the sixth on an Alfredo Amezaga RBI single and three more in the seventh.
Buss knocked in Herrera with an RBI triple in the seventh and then came around to score on a Rusty Ryal double. Ryal extended his hitting streak to six games with the two bagger. Amezaga then cashed in on his third single and third RBI on the evening to cap the scoring.
Centerfielder Matt Angle had two base knocks of his own, including his seventh double of the season (tied for team lead). Gwynn also gunned down a runner at home, bringing the Topes outfield assist total to 15.
Left-handed pitcher Geison Aguasviva entered in the seventh and hurled an inning and faced three batters in the eighth. He exited after allowing a three-run home run to Ryan Wheeler. Peter Moylan tossed to scoreless inning to finish the game, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning four.
Sky Sox starter Drew Pomeranz allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out six over 5.2 innings of work, suffering the loss and falling to 6-1 on the season.
Albuquerque takes on the Sky Sox in game three of the four-game set tomorrow with another 6:35 p.m. start. Southpaw Aaron Laffey (1-1, 5.19) will toe the rubber against righty Jeff Manship (2-1, 6.28).
