Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks will look to keep their hot bats going after their 15-run performance yesterday when they take on the Fresno Grizzlies at 9:05 p.m. central time.
Last Game: The RedHawks used two big innings to total a season-high 15 runs in a 15-2 rout over the Grizzlies. The RedHawks got started right way with a five-run first inning. It stayed 5-0 until the RedHawks scored 10 times in the eighth inning, with a rally that included a two-run homer by Marc Krauss and a grand slam by Brett Wallace. The Grizzlies broke up the shutout with a pair of two-out runs in the ninth inning. RedHawks starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer (3-3) didn't need all the run support. He retired 20 of the first 22 hitters he faced and fired seven scoreless innings with three hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts to tie a season high.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Ross Seaton tries to turn his season around when he heads to the hill tonight...Seaton last pitched Friday in Sacramento and got off to a great start. He was perfect through three innings, but allowed two runs each in both the fourth and fifth. The River Cats hit back-to-back home runs to start the fifth inning, and Seaton left shortly thereafter...Seaton has lost each of his last three starts and has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six outings...He faced Fresno once last year and pitched well, although he did not figure in the decision. On Aug. 17 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Seaton pitched 6.2 innings and allowed one earned run (two runs total). He exited the game with a lead, but the tying run scored later in the inning.
Against the Grizzlies: 2013: 1-1 2012: 3-1 All-time: 50-29 In Fresno: 22-16
The RedHawks took three of four from the Grizzlies in their lone series in 2012. The final game had a memorable ending, with RedHawks pitcher Brian Bass providing a game-winning single in the bottom of the 12 inning to lead to a 3-2 win. The RedHawks pitching staff was great, posting a 2.31 ERA and allowing one home run...During their last trip to Fresno in 2011, the RedHawks split the four-game set. They scored exactly five runs in each game...Excluding Tucson, which has only been in the league since 2011, Fresno is one of three teams the RedHawks have a winning record against at both home and on the road (Omaha, Round Rock).
Big 12 = Big Trip: The RedHawks are in the middle of their annual 12-day road trip while the Big 12 Baseball Championship takes place at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. With one leg complete, the RedHawks will next travel to Des Moines, where they will play five games in four days to make up for an earlier postponement against the Iowa Cubs. Through the first six games they are 3-3.
Running With the Pac: The RedHawks are in the midst of a stretch of 16-straight games against Pacific Conference foes, going 8-6 so far. Last season the RedHawks went 14-17 against the other side of the league, including a 6-10 mark on the road.
Big Bats: Yesterday's 15-run output was the team's largest since a 15-9 win over Iowa on July 24, 2012. The last time they scored 10 runs in an inning was on July 16, 2012 during a 16-6 win in Omaha (6th inning).
Plenty of Room to Spare: The 13-run margin of victory was the RedHawks largest since defeating Reno 15-1 on Aug. 20, 2010. Had the Grizzlies not scored with two outs in the ninth inning, the RedHawks would've notched the largest shutout win in team history (14-0 vs. Nashville, 4/25/98).
Fernando En Fuego: Fernando Martinez has hit safely in four-straight games, going 8-for-16 with a home run and five RBI. Before this recent roll, Martinez had gone just 3-for-26 through his first seven games with OKC this season.
Wally World: Yesterday Brett Wallace became the second RedHawk with five RBI in a game this season (Villar, May 2 vs. Nashville). It was the first time he's driven in five runs in one game since Aug. 19, 2009 while has playing for Sacramento in a contest in Nashville. Over the first six games of the current road trip, Wallace has hit two home runs and collected 10 RBI. Since joining the RedHawks on April 21, he has hit the second-most home runs (7) and has the fourth-most RBI (23) in the PCL.
Dinger Details: The RedHawks hit more than one home run in a game for the first time since May 7. They have 31 homers for the season, and only Tucson (28) and New Orleans (21) have gone deep fewer times...One day after allowing a season-high four home runs, the RedHawks kept the Grizzlies in the park. They have surrendered just 32 home runs this season, the third-least in the league.
Bases Loaded Bashers: The RedHawks are starting to heat up with the bases loaded. They went 4-for-4 with the bases full yesterday and are seven for their last eight with 15 RBI going back to Austin Wates' game-winning single last Tuesday against Salt Lake.
At Your Own RISP: The RedHawks have held their opponents to a .180 average (20-for-111) with runners in scoring position over the last 12 games as well as a .183 mark (24-for-131) during the previous 15 contests.
In the Zone: The RedHawks have issued just three walks over the first two games of this series. They had walked 35 batters over the five games prior to Monday.
Starting Line: Brett Oberholtzer notched the team's longest start of the season with his seven-inning gem yesterday. None of the five previous starts on the road trip lasted longer than five innings, and the starting rotation has combined to go just 29.2 innings during the trip. Three starts have failed to complete five innings. Only two of the last 12 starts overall has lasted at least six full innings.
