New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
SACRAMENTO, California - The New Orleans Zephyrs bullpen stepped up for the second consecutive day as the Z's shutdown the Sacramento River Cats 2-0 at Raley Field. The Z's needed another spot start and AJ Battisto along with three others delivered the Zephyrs its second win of the series.
The Zephyrs starting rotation has taken a couple of hits this week. Tuesday's scheduled starter Brad Hand was a late scratch. He was injured during pregame warm-ups, a strained oblique has put him on the disabled list. The bullpen stepped up pitching ten innings in a 4-3 win. Wednesday afternoon the bullpen was needed again. Doug Mathis left the team on Monday as his wife gave birth to a baby boy. Battisto dealt five innings allowing two hits to earn his first win of the year.
The Z's scratched out a run in the third inning. Gorkys Hernandez singled and stole second base. Kevin Mattison had a bunt base hit to put runners at the corners. Gil Velazquez brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
The Z's added another run in the fifth inning. Hernandez doubled and scored on a two out single from Ed Lucas to give the Zephyrs a 2-0 lead.
Rob Waite pitched an inning and two thirds of relief for the Z's. Waite joined the team on Tuesday flying in from Jacksonville. Zach Phillips worked an inning and a third scoreless relief.
Chris Hatcher retired the Cats for his league leading thirteenth save of the season. The Z's pitching staff worked its fourth shutout of the season. It was the first time this season that Sacramento has been shut-out.
Sacramento starter Andrew Werner pitched a complete game allowing two runs on nine hits in the defeat.
Game Notes - The Zephyrs roster moves continued on Wednesday. Brad Hand was placed of the disabled list and the Z's added pitcher Jordan Conley from Jupiter. Hatcher picked up his 24th career save as a Zephyrs moving him to fourth all-time in franchise history.
