
Zephyrs Rally to Win in Extra Innings, Snap Six Game Slide

SACRAMENTO, California - Gil Velazquez drove in three runs including the game winner in the tenth inning as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Sacramento River Cats 4-3 on Tuesday evening. The win snapped a six game losing streak for the Z's.
The Zephyrs scheduled starter Brad Hand was a late scratch. He strained an oblique during his pregame warm up routine. The Z's called upon its bullpen to pitch; using six relievers to piece together the win. Rett Varner started and worked two innings. James Leverton pitched three and two third scoreless. Dan Jennings earned the win pitching an inning and two thirds.
The Zephyrs grabbed the lead in the fifth inning. Kevin Mattison drilled a solo home run to snap a 2-2 game. The home run ended a drought of 61 consecutive innings for the team. New Orleans is last in the league with 21 team home runs.
The River Cats would strike back in the eighth inning to tie game. Hiro Nakajima doubled and scored on a Michael Taylor base hit.
In the tenth inning Gorkys Hernandez singled to lead off the inning. He stole second base with one out and scored on a Velazquez single. In just his second game for the Zephyrs, Velazquez picked up RBI's in the first inning, third inning and the tenth.
Chris Hatcher retired the Cats for his twelfth save of the season.
Sacramento starter Sonny Gray pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, two earned on seven hits and struck-out 11. The Zephyrs struck-out a season high 16 times in the game.
Game Notes -Wednesday's scheduled starter Doug Mathis was placed on the temporary inactive roster, his wife is expecting. The Z's added pitcher Rob Waite from Class AA Jacksonville. The extra inning win improves the Zephyrs record to 5-1 in extra frames. The Z's are 1-5 on the current eight game road trip.
