Well Earned Promotion For Wizards All-Star

Fort Wayne, IN - Derek McDaid, a representative of the Fort Wayne Wizards during this year's Midwest League All-Star game, was promoted to the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League, officials with the San Diego Padres announced.

McDaid was signed as a free agent by the San Diego system in 2006 after attending UNC Charlotte. He spent the entire 2007 season with the Wizards and opened this year in Fort Wayne before earning his promotion.

McDaid was 3-2 with two saves and a 3.89 earned run average in 33 relief appearances. In a span of 37 innings, he allowed 41 hits, walked 11 and struck out 24.

Heading to Fort Wayne will be right-hander Dylan Axelrod, who opened the 2008 season with the Storm. In 32 relief appearances, Axelrod was 2-1 with a 5.29 earned run average. In 49.1 innings, he allowed 51 hits, walked 19 and struck out 55.

Axelrod was selected by the Padres organization in the 30th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft out of UC-Irvine. He split time between the Wizards and the Arizona-League Padres, going 2-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 21 appearances out of the bullpen. With the Wizards, he was 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA in 10 games. In 21.1 innings with Fort Wayne, he allowed 18 hits, walked four and struck out 15.
