
Kernels shut out Snappers, 7-0, move into three-way tie for first

June 30 2008 - Esmerlin Jimenez (3-2) scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings and struck out five as the Cedar Rapids Kernels recorded their league-best 12th shutout over the Beloit Snappers, 7-0, at Pohlman Field in Beloit on Monday night.
The Kernels gave Jimenez all the runs he would need in the top of the first as Ryan Groth led off the game with a solo home run to right center. Andrew Romine tripled and scored to give the Kernels an early 2-0 lead. Hector Estrella finished the game 2 for 5 with two doubles and 2 RBI and Julio Perez extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 2 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI.
Leonardo Calderon and Tim Kiely combined to allow just two hits over the final two innings.
Beloit starter David Bromberg (5-6) allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and struck out four over 5.1 innings in taking the loss.
With the win, the Kernels improve to 8-4 and 40-40 on the season and move into a three-way tie with Beloit and Burlington for first place in the MWL West. Beloit falls to 8-4 and 44-36.
