Washington Finishes Season Sweep of Gateway with 6-0 Win

August 31, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

Sauget, IL-Shutout pitching from Zac Fuesser and Al Yevoli carried the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, to a 6-0 shutout victory and a season-series sweep over the Gateway Grizzlies Sunday at GCS Ballpark.

Fuesser earned his ninth win of the season throwing six innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed just four hits and struck out seven Grizzlies. Entering a tight game in the seventh, Yevoli stiffed Gateway hitters, pitching three shutout innings in relief en route to getting three outs in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season. Gateway pitcher JaVaun West, who dealt eleven strikeouts, was tagged with his third loss on the season going seven innings, surrendering two earned runs on four hits.

In the top of the second, Carter Bell, who had a grand slam in last night's playoff-clinching victory, hit his second home run in as many nights, a solo blast, giving Washington a 1-0 lead. A RBI single by outfielder Scott Kalamar in the fifth made the score 2-0 in favor of the Wild Things.

Washington plated four insurance runs in the ninth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Back-to-back walks issued to Kalamar and Bell followed by an intentional two-out free pass to Maxx Garrett loaded the bases for Andrew Heck. On a 1-1 count, Heck backed away from the batter's box as an error by Gateway's catcher Garrett Vail allowed Kalamar to head for home putting Washington in front 3-0. Back in and ready to swing the lumber, Heck drilled a two-run single scoring Bell and Garrett for a 5-0 advantage. The Wild Things tacked on their last run of the evening as Heck came around to score on a wild pitch, 6-0.

With the Gateway loss, all six teams for the 2014 Frontier League playoffs have been determined, even though the seedings may not be set until the final day of the regular season. The six teams are as follows; the Southern Illinois Miners, Evansville Otters, Washington Wild Things, Lake Erie Crushers, River City Rascals and Schaumburg Boomers.

The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park Tuesday for a crucial four game series against their Eastern Division foes the Evansville Otters. To Pack the Park for the games, get tickets by calling 724-250-9555, log online to www.washingtonwildthings.com and/or stop by the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.
