Slammers' Max Casper wins Frontier League Citizenship Award
August 31, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- are proud to announce that starting shortstop Max Casper has been named the 2014 winner of the Fran Riordan Citizenship Award as part of this summer's postseason honors released today by the Frontier League.
The award is named after Frontier League Hall of Famer and current Manager of the Florence Freedom. Casper is well known to fans of the Joliet Slammers for his many works of charity and many public appearances throughout the area. Slammers GM Chris Franklin couldn't be happier about the selection. "It's a great thing for him and the organization. He's our starting shortstop yet he's at the main entrance greeting fans before the games 75 percent of the time and he's at every community appearance we do. Whether it's parades or reading books to kids, he's always the first one to say yes. I've even gotten notes from fans on the road saying what a great guy he is and how he's spent time with their kids, so I'm just really proud of him."
Casper, from Circle Pines, Minnesota, spent 2013 with the Lake Erie Crushers and has played in 90 games this season for the Slammers. He has been great on and off the field this summer. Casper is arguably the best defensive shortstop in the league and carries a .336 on-base percentage into Sunday's action. Among the many off-field endeavors he has participated in recently include a visit to a local camp for foster children, where he played softball with the kids. He has also visited several YMCA's and area hospitals. Casper also participated in several youth baseball camps this season and was part of the Homer Glen Fourth of July Parade. That only scratches the surface of the time he has spent reaching out to the Joliet community since he came on board back in May. Max's quote to the Southtown Star newspaper earlier this season concerning his many conversations with area youngsters, "It's always fun to give back to the younger kids because they don't know if you're the Joliet Slammers or Chicago White Sox. You're a professional baseball player and they think the world of you. It's fun to say hi to them."
